What does the law do for me?
This law:
- Guarantees you access to Yukon Government records with limited exceptions;
- Guarantees you access to your own personal information in Yukon Government records;
- Gives you the right to ask for corrections to your own personal information in Yukon Government records, if it is not accurate.
This law also:
- Prevents other people from seeing information about you without your permission;
- Prevents your personal information from being collected, used or made public without authorization;
- Provides for an independent review of decisions about disclosure of information, possible violation of individual privacy, correction of personal information, extension of response time and waiver of fees.

What does the Act cover?
- The Act applies to all Public Bodies, that is, all the departments, corporations and agencies of Yukon Government;
- It does not apply to the Yukon Legislative Assembly, Yukon courts, Yukon College, Yukon Hospital Corporation, and some boards and committees (including boards and committees established under Land Claims legislation).

Will I need to make use of the Act?
Rarely. We believe in:
- open government; and
- your right to know about most of the things we do.
When you need information, contact the appropriate government department or agency to make a request.

What records can I ask to see?
- Personal information about you;
- Files, letters, agreements, microforms and computer records dealing with all aspects of government operations.

What records can’t I see?
Certain types of records are protected such as:
- Personal information about other individuals;
- Information that could cause a person or a government body to make or lose money;
- Information that could be a threat to public safety;
- Information that could interfere with law enforcement;
- Cabinet records for up to 15 years.

What can I do if my request is turned down?

How long will it take to get a response to my application?
- Within 30 days of the receipt of your request, in most cases;
- More than 30 days if:
- a third party is affected by your request; or
- your request is not clear or requires additional search or preparation time.
- You will be notified of any delay.

What can I do if my application is turned down?
If your application is refused or partly refused, you can:
- Request a review of the decision from the Information and Privacy Commissioner, who will make a recommendation to the government;
- Appeal to the Yukon Supreme Court if you do not agree with the Commissioner's recommendation or it is not accepted by the government. The Court can order the release of information if it rules in your favour.

How much will it cost me?
- No charge for applying for information;
- You will be charged for:
- search and preparation time longer than 3 hours;
- making copies of records;
- you may request a waiver of fees if paying all or part of the fees would be an undue financial burden for you.
- You will be given an estimate of the cost in advance.

How can I ensure that information about me is correct?
- Ask to see your personal information;
- Apply in writing using the Request for Correction of Personal Information Form (
539KB) to have the information changed if you believe there are errors;
- Your changes will be added to the record; and
- Others who have seen your records will be informed of the new information.
